India’s semiconductor manufacturing plans have just been strengthened following news that the Tata Electronics unit’s Jagiroad semiconductor plant will start producing components this fiscal year.
In an important development for India’s attempts to establish its own semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure, the new semiconductor assembly and test factory being established by Tata Electronics in Jagiroad, Assam is expected to kick off production operations during the present fiscal year itself. This comes after recent talks held between Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the state of the project.
Developed as part of a project worth around ₹27,000 crore, the factory is considered one of the largest semiconductor plants in the process of being built currently in the country.
Jagiroad project takes step towards commercial operation:
Built in Morigaon District, Assam, the factory is planned to serve as an ultra-high capacity semiconductor fabrication and testing site. It would produce up to 48 million semiconductor devices daily through innovative package designs like Flip-chip technology and Integrated System in Package.
This project falls under the larger umbrella of India Semiconductor Mission, which focuses on enhancing domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity to limit its reliance on imported semiconductors. The construction process is going well after obtaining permission from the government back in 2024 and has been considered an important player in Tata Electronics’ semiconductor fabrication strategy.
Economic and employment implications:
In addition to the production of semiconductors, the facility is also likely to provide numerous employment prospects for the region. The project is expected to result in 15,000 job positions, direct and indirect.
Another significant advantage of the facility is that it has received attention from some of the largest tech companies around the globe. In early 2023, Tata Electronics collaborated with Qualcomm Technologies and established a partnership that will see the latter manufacture automotive modules at the new Assam facility.
With production scheduled to commence this fiscal year, the Jagiroad facility is poised to play a vital role in the semiconductor ecosystem of India while contributing to the industrialization of Assam and North East India.
