Dutch semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia and Tata Electronics have announced a strategic partnership spanning front-end wafer fabrication, back-end assembly and testing, and technology innovation. The multi-stage agreement establishes a long-term framework to manufacture discrete power devices in India, supporting both companies’ expansion ambitions while advancing India’s indigenous semiconductor ecosystem.
Context of the Cooperation
Global semiconductor manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) face increasing pressure to diversify production footprints, secure component supplies, and establish geographically balanced manufacturing networks across automotive, industrial, consumer, and energy applications. At the same time, India is actively accelerating its national semiconductor ecosystem by building integrated commercial fabs and advanced packaging facilities.
To address these supply chain resilience requirements, cooperation was established between Nexperia and Tata Electronics. The partnership pairs Nexperia’s design expertise in discrete, power, and analog semiconductors—shipping over 100 billion components annually—with Tata Electronics’ large-scale manufacturing infrastructure investments in India. Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Electronics, noted that partnering with Nexperia across the manufacturing value chain represents a significant step in developing a globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem that aligns with growing technology ties between India and Europe. Stefan Tilger, interim CEO of Nexperia, highlighted that combining complementary capabilities across technology, manufacturing, and innovation strengthens supply chain resilience and supports a balanced global production footprint.
Technical Solution and Responsibilities
The strategic partnership is organized across three primary pillars: front-end wafer fabrication, back-end assembly and test, and technology and ecosystem development. Responsibilities and technology allocations are divided across the companies’ facilities:
Tata Electronics provides front-end foundry services from its upcoming 300mm commercial semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, and executes advanced packaging, assembly, and testing from its facility in Jagiroad, Assam.
Nexperia contributes product architectures, technical process specifications, and production volume requirements for its discrete semiconductor portfolio, including metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs).
At a system level, the front-end collaboration lays the groundwork to produce Nexperia’s power MOSFET portfolio on 300mm silicon wafers at the Dholera fab. In parallel, the back-end engagement routes Nexperia’s discrete semiconductor products into Tata’s Jagiroad facility for assembly, marking, and functional testing. Beyond direct production, the companies will co-develop research initiatives and workforce capabilities to accelerate process innovation and establish scalable manufacturing pipelines.
Deployment or Implementation
The implementation roadmap centers on integrating Nexperia’s product lines into Tata Electronics’ two flagship manufacturing builds, which represent a combined capital investment of $14 billion (USD):
- Dholera Fab (Gujarat): Front-end wafer engineering and process qualification to prepare the 300mm commercial line for volume production of Nexperia’s MOSFET portfolio.
- Jagiroad Facility (Assam): Back-end packaging and test implementation for Nexperia’s discrete semiconductor products.
The phased rollout establishes production pathways in India to serve automotive, industrial, and consumer markets worldwide, providing Nexperia with flexible manufacturing capacity while cementing Tata Electronics’ facilities as an operational node in the international semiconductor supply chain.
