Industrywiz Daily updates

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has recently announced that it will be installing a third production line at its Tapukara manufacturing plant located in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. The move is part of the company’s larger strategy to expand its production capacity to meet the increasing demand for two-wheelers in the country. The company will be investing around INR 15 billion in the new production line and will also be acquiring around 73,700 square meters of land for the same.

The third production line is expected to become operational by the year 2028 and will have a production capacity of around 670,000 units every year. The installation of the third production line will help the company increase the production capacity of the Tapukara plant to 2.01 million units every year and will provide employment for more than 2,000 people in the region. The third production line will be able to produce scooters and motorcycles in a flexible manner.

Building towards a production capacity of 8 million units by the end of the financial year 2028:

The Tapukara expansion is part of a larger production capacity building initiative by Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India’s manufacturing facilities. The company currently operates four plants in India with a combined annual production capacity of 6.25 million units. The company is also adding a fourth production line at its Vithalapur plant in the Ahmedabad district of Gujarat. Operations at the new line will start in the financial year 2027. These initiatives put together will enable Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India Ltd to increase its production capacity from the current 6.25 million units to around 8 million units by the end of the financial year 2028.

Commenting on the occasion, Tsutsumu Otani, President and CEO of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India said, “This expansion will enable us to respond more effectively to the needs of the market and deliver value that supports the aspirations of millions of customers.”

Rajasthan’s increasing manufacturing portfolio:

The company’s Tapukara plant, which commenced operations in July 2011 with an initial annual production capacity of 600,000 units, has expanded and become more automated following a series of upgrades and expansions starting in 2023. The plant’s current annual production capacity is 1.3 million units and is expected to reach 1.34 million units by the end of the financial year 2026 following continued improvements in efficiency.

Bhajan Lal Sharma, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, said the company’s investment was a welcome move and that the state continued to offer itself as a viable platform for large-scale manufacturing activities. Since the company’s inception in India in 2001, it has cumulatively produced over 70 million units.

The company claims that all the new facilities at the Tapukara plant will be designed with sustainable technologies that match the company’s global vision of achieving a carbon-free environment by the year 2050.
