Ashok Leyland has launched a new integrated manufacturing facility for the manufacture of Commercial Vehicles in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. This new facility is a new addition to their manufacturing network in the country as it symbolizes their future-ready manufacturing and clean mobility practices. The new facility stands at Sarojini Nagar Industrial Area, close to Lucknow Airport.
The plant was inaugurated in the presence of top government officials from the Centre and the State of Uttar Pradesh. It was attended by representatives from the automotive sector, international partners, suppliers, and the top executives from the Ashok Leyland Group and the Hinduja Group. The plant is built on over 70 acres of land and is designed to accommodate the manufacture of electric vehicles and more.
Concentrating in electric vehicles and localization:
The Lucknow plant has an initial production capacity of producing a maximum of 5,000 vehicles per year and aims to have electric vehicles and electric buses as key products. The plant has state-of-the-art automation and quality systems.
A large number of people have been hired from the local workforce, with many of them from Uttar Pradesh, besides an increasing number of women workers. Thus, Ashok Leyland is following its policy of localisation, skill creation, and job creation for people in regions where it operates.
Sustainable manufacturing in the essence:
The plant has been designed as a green manufacturing facility, incorporating features such as the use of solar panels on the rooftops, energy-saving LED lights, battery-run in-plant logistics, and water management systems that are designed to ensure the company keeps a positive water balance. And, a zero-discharge approach has also been included.
The above efforts are part of Ashok Leyland’s overall sustainability strategy and its efforts to reach net zero emissions by 2048. The new plant demonstrates the company’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its manufacturing process rather than considering it a separate project.
Supporting Uttar Pradesh’s EV ambitions:
Uttar Pradesh is thus fast emerging as a significant market both for electric mobility and industrial investment. The new plant is in tune with the state’s priorities of emphasis on clean transport and economic growth led by manufacturing. For Ashok Leyland, the facility consolidates its position in the commercial vehicle segment while supporting national priorities such as Make in India and the transition to low-emission mobility.
Going forward, with the Lucknow plant now in operation, Ashok Leyland will contribute towards the evolving commercial vehicle and electric mobility ecosystem in India through in-country manufacturing, technology adoption, and workforce development.
