The Walmart-owned Indian e-commerce platform Flipkart plans to venture into the sale of movie and concert tickets in India, tapping into an area that is quickly growing amid the rise in consumer expenditure on entertainment, sources close to the development have told CNBC.
The Indian entertainment ticketing sector has witnessed growth in the past year as there has been a surge in demand for massive concerts, international tours, and sporting events which attract hundreds of thousands of spectators in several cities in India, with its biggest event being cricket matches.
The source cited that Flipkart planned to enter the segment next month, in competition with BookMyShow and District by Zomato to benefit from the increasing spending capacity of Indians and their increasing use of smartphones.
According to another source, Flipkart also plans to initiate the delivery of food through the e-commerce app from May.
