Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Tata Electronics have formed a manufacturing partnership to manufacture Qualcomm Automotive Modules in India. As per the partnership, Tata Electronics will become a manufacturing partner for Qualcomm, thus expanding the global module manufacturing footprint of Qualcomm. This partnership will also increase the importance of India in the global automotive electronics manufacturing industry.
The manufacturing process will begin at Tata Electronics’ new outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam. This partnership is in line with India’s Make in India initiative and the industry trend of supply chain diversification and regionalization.
Local manufacturing for software defined vehicles:
Qualcomm Automotive Modules integrate Snapdragon Digital Chassis system on chips with key system components into integrated, production-ready modules. These modules support digital cockpits, infotainment, vehicle connectivity, and intelligent driver systems. With the goal of helping automakers accelerate development and simplify system integration, the company provides modular and scalable architectures.
With the increasing demand for software defined vehicles, local manufacturing in India is expected to cater to both domestic and international automakers.
Assam OSAT facility to be the cornerstone of the semiconductor drive:
This is the country’s first homegrown high volume OSAT facility. The investment in this facility is pegged at US$3 billion. The facility will be centered on wire bond, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging. These are key for the automotive, communication, IoT, and AI segments.
This deal is part of its plan to become a global manufacturing powerhouse for semiconductor and advanced electronics solutions. This deal is important for Qualcomm as it helps increase production capacity in a key market and also supports its automotive vision.
