In West Bengal, a new milk processing unit with a processing capacity of 1.5 lakh litres of milk per day has been launched in Nadia. The new unit is expected to help enhance milk processing, as well as provide additional income opportunities for farmers. In a bid to upgrade its milk processing sector, West Bengal launched a new milk processing plant in Nadia. This milk processing plant is branded ‘Banglar Dairy‘. The plant was inaugurated by none other than CM Mamata Banerjee.
The processing capacity of the newly established plant stands at 1.5 lakh (150,000) liters per day, capable of handling the extra milk generated by local cooperatives. The proposal targets addressing the needs of the urban population with high standards of cleanliness, in an bid to control consumer prices through an organized processing point for the dairy products of the district.
An important aspect of this initiative is the improvement of the socio-economic condition of rural farmers. This initiative is expected to have a direct impact on thousands of dairy farmers in the country because it provides them with a stable and transparent market source where they can sell their raw materials. It was stated that the project will ensure “fair prices” for the farmers and that there will be no middlemen involved.
The expansion project of the Banglar Dairy also aims to ensure job opportunities, both direct and indirect, from technical to quality concerns. This aims to meet regional development, where industrialization is used as an instrument to ensure regional livelihoods and training in the agricultural business field.
This is part of a number of upgradation projects being carried out in the dairy sector across the state. This is evidence of the seriousness of the government’s efforts towards ensuring food security, as well as development. These kinds of projects will help make the dairy sector in West Bengal more sustainable in such a competitive economy.
