National Textiles Ministers conference opens in Guwahati to chart growth roadmap for sector

The conference of the National Textiles Ministers is being inaugurated at Guwahati to prepare a roadmap for development of the textile sector in the country. The two-day National Textiles Ministers’ Conference has begun in the city of Guwahati in the Indian state of Assam on Tuesday, with the intention of bringing together the Ministers of the Textile Departments of Indian States and Union Territories.

The conference has been organized by the Ministry of Textiles with the theme “India’s Textiles: Weaving Growth, Heritage & Innovation” with a focus to induce cooperative federalism to make India a global destination for textiles, apparel, and technical textiles. The inaugural session was headed by some major people including Giriraj Singh, union ministers of textiles, Dr. Mohan Yadav, chief ministers of Madhya Pradesh state, Pabitra Margherita, state ministers of textiles.

Giriraj Singh added that the Union Government was taking a consistent and pragmatic approach to have harmonization between production, exports, and sustainable growth in the textile industry. The Union Minister added that the conference would help to facilitate brainstorming, innovation, and idea-sharing with the aim of formulating a strong roadmap to strengthen this particular industry. The Union Minister appealed to States/Union Territories to formulate investment-friendly policies, adding more significance to increased investment at the state level. The Union Minister was of the view that two days of discussion would result in formulating a roadmap regarding what needs to be done.

“Regarding the Northeastern region, Singh said the Prime Minister had set a high priority for the development of this region, with the Government’s emphasis on developing the overall infrastructure in this region.” “It is a source of pride that the National Textiles Ministers’ Conference is being held in Guwahati,” Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, who inaugurated the event, said, “and what’s special is that this offers the opportunity to the Central and state governments to come together to draw up the plan on the way forward in the textile sector.” According to Minister of State for Textiles Margherita and quoting the Handloom Census report of 2019-2020, “The Northeastern states together contribute the maximum to the total handloom products, and that is 52%.”

Secretary (Textiles) Neelam Shami Rao stated that the textile industry remained an important part of Indian society and that close to 500 districts in the country exported one or more textile products into the international market. Additional Secretary (Textiles) Rohit Kansal stated that the textile industry in the country represented one of the largest textile-producing countries in the international community and that it was growing very rapidly, with the Union Government working in collaboration with State Governments to support its growth.
