Canada’s Energy Minister, Tim Hodgson, is currently in India, and he stressed the “essential need for more energy trade.” He pointed out that the energy demand in India is expected to grow at a rate that will surpass even China and Southeast Asia combined in the next decade. This is a huge opportunity for Canada to increase its exports outside of the U.S. market.
Strategic Energy Dialogue Revived:
The visit of Canada’s Energy Minister Tim Hodgson to India is a major milestone in the relationship between the two countries, led by the inaugural federal minister’s attendance at the India Energy Week and the restart of Canada-India energy dialogues after an eight-year gap. This move reflects a more pragmatic approach, focusing on economic potential rather than the historical diplomatic tensions. Minister Hodgson clearly articulated that Canada’s vision of becoming an energy superpower depends on strong trade ties with India, which is one of the world’s most important and growing energy markets.
The Unprecedented Demand Growth in India:
The energy demand in India is expected to grow substantially, with predictions that it will surpass that of China and the entire Southeast Asia combined over the next ten years. This is attributed to the fact that India is the third-largest energy consumer in the world and has a rapidly growing economy. Union Minister of Petroleum Hardeep Puri stated that the share of India’s global energy demand is expected to reach 10% by 2050, underlining the need for various energy sources to aid in its development journey. This huge demand gives Canada an opportunity to end its overdependence on the U.S. market, in line with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s pledge to double non-U.S. exports.
Key Sectors for Cooperation:
Canada is lining up to be an important supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), clean energy technologies, uranium, and critical minerals to India. The minister particularly mentioned floating storage facilities for liquefied gas as an important infrastructure segment to facilitate this cooperation. This cooperation also includes facilitating the energy transition in India, which has been reinforced by the ambitious clean energy goals of India itself and its importance as a large global energy market. The new dialogue is intended to provide a foundation for major trade and investment partnerships in these key sectors.
