Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between PETRONAS Lubricants India and Tata Motors on responsible collection and recycling of used automotive lubricants. Both companies will conduct a pilot of a structured and scalable collection model in the states of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
The partnership will leverage both their industrial expertise to tackle issues related to the management of used lubricant disposal. It will also help the companies adhere to India’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation and circular economy aspirations.
Companies work on oil recycling:
The pilot will develop an organized and traceable system for handling of used lubricants which are hazardous wastes. The system will involve collection, storage, transportation, and recycling of used automotive lubricants. The process will ensure that the used oils are directed to authorized recyclers for further conversion into high-quality re-refined base oil.
PETRONAS Lubricants India will be responsible for the aggregation and movement of used lubricants using authorized collection channels. They will also make sure that collected lubricants are sent to genuine recyclers.
Tata Motors leverages service network
Tata Motors will use its extensive authorised service network to support structured collection across its ecosystem. The company will also promote responsible disposal practices among stakeholders within its network. The partnership aims to improve resource efficiency while reducing environmental risks associated with improper used oil management.

Model meets the objectives of circular economy:
Both the firms would evaluate the effectiveness of the model in both states as part of the pilot program. The program could be useful in setting up better benchmarks for responsible used oil management in the automobile industry. By reusing the materials, the model would help reduce wastage and increase resource efficiency.
The joint venture is also aligned with the overall shift of the country towards a circular and resource-efficient economy.
