Adani Defence & Aerospace Ltd. is planning a ₹2,500 crore investment for setting up what the company terms as South Asia’s largest private missile manufacturing ecosystem in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh. It will be an integrated set-up which will see missile system integration, composite propellant production, and TNT manufacturing all happening at the same place, a first ever in India’s private defence industry. The foundation stone laying ceremony for this project was done in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
The project is being set up to facilitate the manufacturing of medium to long range missile systems in addition to strengthening the indigenous manufacturing process.
Ecosystem integrated for enhancing the defence supply chain:
As per Adani Defence, the Shivpuri plant will enable a fully-integrated manufacturing ecosystem from energetic materials to propulsion systems to missile integration. The company believes that the project will help create employment for about 5,000 workers directly and indirectly and offer opportunities for over 50 MSMEs to join the supplier ecosystem at Shivpuri. The project will take about three years to be completed.
The project fits in the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ strategy of the Government of India, whereby they plan to boost their indigenous defence manufacturing capability and move away from foreign vendors. The ecosystem will also contribute to the serial production of missiles designed by the DRDO.
Existing defense investment:
Shivpuri plant enhances the position of Adani Defense in the Indian defense manufacturing industry, as in 2024, the company commissioned its first ammunition and missiles production facility in Kanpur as part of the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor. With the new investment in Madhya Pradesh, Adani Defense has expanded its manufacturing capacities by adding missile production capabilities while the state emerges as a defense manufacturing destination.
The investment shows the growing importance of private industry in creating strategic defense capabilities. Integration approach is projected to enhance localization, support the development of the local supply chain and help achieve the national goal of creating defense manufacturing infrastructure.
