Maruti Suzuki India Limited has entered into an MoU with the Directorate of Employment and Training, Government of Gujarat, for setting up of Advanced Manufacturing Labs (AMLs) at five ITIs in Gujarat. This collaboration is expected to help in enhancing the industry relevant skills and developing a skilled workforce according to the current manufacturing needs.
These labs will be set up in ITIs in Palanpur, Bhavnagar, Surendranagar, Godhra and Dahod. These labs have been set up as part of the corporate social responsibility initiatives of Maruti Suzuki India and will replicate actual shop floor conditions with practical exposure to manufacturing process to the students. Training modules include Assembly, Welding, Painting, Machining, Mechatronics & Industrial Safety.
Overcoming industry skills gap:
This initiative of Maruti Suzuki India is in line with the Skill India Mission of the Government of India and is geared towards overcoming the skills gap between the industry and youth.
In the view of Maruti Suzuki, this initiative is consistent with its emphasis on skills development in the long run. It has been working with many ITIs in India and has made significant investments in training and development via its CSR initiatives. With the inclusion of five manufacturing centers in Gujarat, the company will be adding more Advanced Manufacturing Labs in the country.
Supporting growth in manufacturing:
The skills development initiative arrives at a time when the company is planning to increase its manufacturing base in Gujarat. It is making plans for operationalizing a fourth manufacturing line at Hansalpur which will bring the capacity at the site to one million units a year from the existing 750,000 units. There is also another manufacturing center coming up in Sanand which will have an annual capacity of one million units.
When both these initiatives are completed, Maruti Suzuki is expected to have a manufacturing capacity of two million units a year in Gujarat.
