The semiconductor dream of India got a boost with the signing of a strategic partnership agreement by Tata Electronics and ASML for India’s first-ever commercial semiconductor factory on 300 mm wafers in Dholera, Gujarat. The pact seeks to enhance semiconductor production, nurture talented personnel locally, and create a sustainable supply chain.
Advanced technology for India’s first semiconductor fab:
Tata Electronics and ASML entered into an agreement under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster the development of India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. As per the pact, ASML will provide its latest generation of lithography systems and solutions for Tata Electronics’ planned semiconductor fabrication factory in Dholera, Gujarat.
The two firms stated that their partnership would help ensure seamless operations of India’s first commercial 300 mm semiconductor fab. This initiative comes as a continuation of the ongoing technological cooperation between India and the Netherlands, particularly in vital areas like semiconductor technology.
Tata Electronics has allocated an investment of approximately US$11 billion for this project, which will produce semiconductor chips for various sectors such as automobile, mobile phone, and AI. Moreover, Tata Electronics has inked a deal with Taiwan-based PSMC to utilize semiconductor technologies from 28nm to 110nm.
Skills development, research and supply chain advancements:
Apart from technological assistance, Tata Electronics and ASML will collaborate in areas related to skills development, research initiatives, and supply chain resilience. Both companies will focus on nurturing a strong national workforce with the necessary expertise in lithography. Lithography is critical for the manufacture of semiconductors.
Speaking about the collaboration, Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD of Tata Electronics, stated, “We are delighted to partner with ASML, an innovative leader in lithography and enabler for our semiconductor customers worldwide.”
Further commenting, he explained that the partnership would “help establish a resilient and reliable supply chain for our global customers, while simultaneously developing local talents.”
Vision towards India’s semiconductor future:
Commenting on India’s thriving semiconductor industry and the partnership, ASML President & CEO Christophe Fouquet mentioned several promising prospects in the Indian semiconductor market and referred to the collaboration as a “significant milestone.”
He elaborated, “We believe that Tata Electronics is well-positioned to achieve its aspirations in building semiconductor capabilities.”
Construction activities at the Dholera facility are moving fast, and both companies will continue investing in research, collaborations, and training programs in support of India’s semiconductor aspirations.
