Ford prepares to return to Chennai

Industrywiz Daily updates

Ford Motor Company is set to resume production from its Chennai facility based in Maraimalai Nagar as early as June 2026, as it plans to return to large-scale production. It has been almost five years since the company suspended vehicle production and sales in India in 2021 due to continuous financial losses.

Whilst it withdrew from passenger vehicles in India, it nonetheless retained significant strategic interests in the country as part of its overall network of manufacturing and engineering operations worldwide. The planned reopening of the Chennai auto plant is testament to that, although it will no longer produce vehicles for the local market. It is now intended to become an export-oriented powertrain plant.

From Assembly Line to Engine Hub:

Under a memorandum of understanding signed with the Tamil Nadu government, the Maraimalai Nagar facility will be repurposed to focus on the manufacture of the next generation of engines for export markets. This plant has remained largely dormant since 2021 and is likely to be upgraded to support next-gen powertrain manufacturing processes.

The production facility, when operational, would be capable of producing about 235,000 engines annually. There is no information from Ford about the technical aspects of the new engines, including engine CC, fuel type, and compatibility with hybrid or electrical systems. However, the export focus would be in line with Ford’s global car platforms.

The chance also exists that certain Ford models, such as the Everest, also known by the name Endeavour in India, could, in the long run, be produced in Chennai and allocated for certain international markets, though this has yet to be confirmed.

Investment, Jobs, Supply Chain Impact:

The company plans to fund the revival with an estimated investment of Rs 3,250 crore. The project also promises to generate about 600 jobs, with indirect employment also being generated through Tamil Nadu manufacturers.

Nevertheless, although no longer in retail sales in the country, the company has managed to stay in the industry through its facility in Sanand, Gujarat; it exports powertrains from this plant. It currently operates from Tata Motors after the company divested from its plants in 2021.

The Chennai restart underscores India’s importance as an export and engineering center for Ford Motor Co., even though a relaunch of its India car sales effort seems unlikely anytime soon. For Tamil Nadu State, it underscores its importance as an important car and parts manufacturing hub.

Ford’s resumed manufacturing activities may infuse life into component networks in the region, fuel the transfer of powertrain technologies, and further accelerate the country’s position in global automotive networks.
