Tata Chemicals would invest Rs 515 Cr in a salt facility in Tamil Nadu

Industrywiz Daily updates

Tata Chemicals has given the green light for the establishment of a greenfield iodised vacuum salt dried (IVSD) manufacturing facility at Valinokkam, Tamil Nadu, as part of its broader strategy to strengthen its manufacturing and distribution capabilities in South India. The project entails a capital investment of ₹515 crore and will have an installed production capacity of 210 kilotonnes per annum (KTPA). The facility is expected to become fully operational within 36 months, following the completion of construction and commissioning activities.

The investment will be financed through a combination of internal accruals and external borrowings, providing Tata Chemicals with the flexibility to manage capital efficiently while supporting long-term growth. Currently, the company operates a large IVSD facility at Mithapur, Gujarat, with an annual production capacity of 1.6 million tonnes, which caters to a significant portion of domestic demand across various regions.

The new Valinokkam plant is strategically located to improve supply chain efficiency and optimise distribution across southern markets. By manufacturing closer to key consumption centres, Tata Chemicals aims to lower logistics and transportation costs, reduce delivery timelines, and enhance service reliability for customers. This expansion underscores the company’s continued focus on capacity augmentation, regional market penetration, and operational efficiency, while reinforcing its commitment to strengthening India’s food-grade salt infrastructure and supporting long-term demand growth in the southern region.
