The Eggersmann Group company BRT Hartner GmbH has, for the first time, presented its own sensor-based, AI-supported sorting system: the “BRT Hartner AS Automatic Sorter”.
The solution was designed and manufactured within a strategic partnership with RTT System GmbH. The sorter combines an acceleration conveyor, optical detection, and compressed air sorting. Its core element is a “Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) camera” providing, in addition to high-resolution image data, further information on material properties.

Sensor Fusion for Comprehensive Material Analysis
The system also uses a “Sensor Fusion Concept,” which fuses data from NIR, color, 3D, and metal sensors directly at the raw data level. This provides assurance that complete datasets are present for analysis and subsequently assessed by means of a recognition algorithm based on comprehensive training material. The live assignment of materials can be viewed on an operating display; in the case of lightweight packaging, packaging types are also documented.
According to the manufacturer, the architecture of the sensor fusion allows subsequent expansion by the addition of other sensor technologies. Optionally, the standard spectral AI can be supplemented with an object-recognizing AI, if a color camera is integrated.
The sorter is designed for materials that are difficult to separate by conventional means. The AI should be able to differentiate both material types and object classes with high precision, which holds value especially in sorting various plastic fractions, for instance, against the growing demands from mechanical and chemical plastic recycling. Applications in refuse-derived fuel production and general contaminant removal are also envisioned.

Efficient Lighting and Service-Friendly Design
The system employs commercially available illuminants for operation and, per the manufacturer’s claim, requires roughly half as many light sources as competing solutions based on HSI technology. The internal platform is extendable to facilitate maintenance jobs, and optional access points are included on the sensor unit for the same purpose.
The cooperation between BRT Hartner and RTT System combines BRT Hartner’s international sales network and long-standing machine construction experience with RTT System’s expertise in sensor-based analysis and inspection systems. Both companies have already established solutions in the recycling sector: BRT Hartner in areas such as mechanical separation, and RTT System in optical quality control and robot-assisted sorting technology.
